The cartoon above was drawn by Tom Toles for the Washington Post. It shows President Obama inside of a Kangaroo pouch which represents our recent troop addition to Australia, two men from China who are likely key officials like the President Hu Jintao, and a little caption that reads "Release the Platypuses" which suggests that this military move is to be able to keep an eye on China and check their power. The main device that Tom Toles seems to use in this cartoon is satire for the dry humor and caricature for the over the top representation of everything. The cartoon deal with the deployment of a few troops to Australia for its proximity to China. The tone of the cartoon suggests that while America has made this move, we're still trying to stay on good terms with China and offering friendship in hopes that the Chinese will not be upset with these obvious military move. Tom Toles does not seem to be that against either country or Obama's actions, merely pointing out the humor of the situation that the US is hoping China will not be too concerned with this fairly obvious move.
